Opinion: The Minsk sambo tournament becomes more competitive every year

MINSK, 21 February (BelTA) – The sambo tournament in Minsk is becoming more competitive every year, head coach of the Belarusian national sambo team Dmitry Bazylev told BelTA at the 24th International Category A Sambo Tournament for the Prizes of the President of Belarus which is underway at the Minsk Sports Palace.

“The Minsk tournament is a serious warm-up for sambo wrestlers from different countries. Very strong athletes come here. Competition at sambo competitions in Minsk is increasing every year. Competitions help discover new talents,” said Dmitry Bazylev. He said that for many young athletes the tournament is of great importance.

Representatives of 24 countries are competing for medals of the Minsk tournament. Belarus has fielded about 60 athletes. The Presidential Sports Club has established special prizes of the tournament.

The competitions are organized by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), the Sports and Tourism Ministry, the President's Sports Club, the Minsk City Hall, the National Olympic Committee, and the Belarusian Sambo Federation.

Entry is free. The tournament will wrap up on 21 February.

In 2019, Belarusian sambo wrestlers won 23 (seven gold, eight silver and eight bronze) medals at the International Category A Sambo Tournament in Minsk.
