Opinion: Belarus showed good results at the Draughts Nations Cup group stage

MINSK, 13 July (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes demonstrated good results at the group stage of the Online Draughts Nations Cup, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Belarusian Draughts Federation Vitaly Anisko.

“The Nations Cup is the largest online draughts-100 tournament. In fact, it is a world team championship. There are a lot of participating countries, a high competition. We led after the sixth round of men's event, but in the seventh round it did not work out. The girls could play better. We still have time. In general, we can say that our teams performed well,” said Vitaly Anisko.

According to him, Belarusians are able to compete for medals. “The Belarusian athletes proved it after defeating the Russians, the leaders of the standings, and winning five out of seven matches,” said the head of the Belarusian Draughts Federation. “Online tournaments is a good practice during the coronavirus pandemic, when it is impossible to attend the tournament. Unfortunately, there are so-called cheaters, which use third-party programs. Special programs and a jury analyze the matches and make a decision. It is impossible to be 100% sure of honesty, but everything goes towards making sure the sport is clean,” he added.

The preliminary stage of the Nations Cup tournament is over. The Belarusian men's team placed fourth with ten points. Russia topped the table (12 points). Ukraine went second (11 points). China placed third (11 points). The men's tournament determined 14 playoff participants among 29 national teams according to the Swiss system.

Eleven teams are taking part in women's event. They play in a round-robin system, with the six best advancing to the playoffs. The Belarusian national team has so far scored seven points to take the 5th place. Russia goes first (14 points). Mongolia goes second (11 points). Third is China (11 points).
