Olympic judo qualifiers canceled over coronavirus until end of April

MINSK, 11 March (BelTA) – All Olympic judo qualification events have been canceled until the end of April, the International Judo Federation (IJF) made the decision due to the ongoing spread of the novel virus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian National Olympic Committee.

The canceled tournaments include the Yekaterinburg Grand Slam in Russia scheduled for 13-15 March and also the Grand Prix in Tbilisi (Georgia) slated for 27-29 March and the Grand Prix Antalya (Turkey) scheduled for 3-5 April. The tournament in Rabat (Morocco) had been canceled earlier. The competitions due in May and June are still on the IJF calendar.

The canceled competitions are part of the Tokyo 2020 qualification process. The International Judo Federation believes that it is of high importance to guaranty the safety of the whole judo family at the present moment.

The outbreak of the new coronavirus was registered in Wuhan, China in late December 2019. The World Healthcare Organization (WHO) recognized the novel virus spread as an epidemic with multiple hotspots and declared it an international emergency.
