Olympic champion calls to increase enrollment of children in figure skating schools in Vitebsk

VITEBSK, 14 April (BelTA) – Today we need to increase enrollment of children in figure skating schools, to find as many talented guys as possible to give a boost to the development of this sport, Olympic champion in ice dancing Natalia Bestemianova said after a ceremony to sign a cooperation agreement between the Vitebsk Oblast Figure Skating Federation and the Moscow Oblast Figure Skating Federation in Vitebsk, BelTA has learned.

“Now Belarus is seeking to regain the high positions in figure skating. This is an achievable goal, and our federation can help you with this. More so since we have signed the cooperation agreement this is our common goal now,” the celebrated ice dancer said. The agreement envisages joint training of athletes, organization of competitions, provision of methodological and financial support. Natalia Bestemianova said she is ready to give master classes in Belarus, help with choreography. With a view to popularizing this sport, she suggested organizing a tour of the legendary theater of ice miniatures under the direction of Igor Bobrin around Belarus.

The measures to promote figure skating were discussed during a meeting between Natalia Bestemianova and Vitebsk Oblast Governor Nikolai Sherstnev.

“The governor is very supportive of our sport. The measures that we discussed will help athletes grow professionally, will give the opportunity to develop figure skating both in Vitebsk Oblast and in Belarus in general,” Natalia Bestemianova noted.

According to Chairperson of the Vitebsk Oblast Figure Skating Federation Svetlana Golovkina, cooperation with the world's best figure skating school will help solve the problem of coaching staff in the region.

Natalia Bestemianova became the guest of honor of the Vitebsk Oblast Open Figure Skating Championship North Star which started in Vitebsk on 14 April. The competition features more than 150 young skaters from Russia, Lithuania and Belarus.

The tournament has been organized by the sport and tourism department of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee, the Vitebsk Oblast center of Olympic reserve for winter sports and the Figure Skating Federation of Vitebsk Oblast.
