MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – The next World Athletics Championships will take place in Oregon, the United States on 15-24 July 2022, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Athletics Federation.
The new dates were named due to the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The World Athletics Championships were originally scheduled for 6-15 August 2021.
According to the Belarusian Athletics Federation, the World Athletics Council approved the new dates after extensive discussions with sport's stakeholders, including organizers of two other major championships due to take place in July-August 2022: the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and the multisport European Championships in Munich. The new schedule will prevent a direct conflict between any of these major events and will ensure athletes can compete in up to three world-class competitions.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) named a new deadline for the Tokyo Olympics qualification period. It will be over on 29 June 2021.
As for today, 72 Belarusian athletes competing in 15 sports have qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Olympic qualifying tournaments have been postponed in the light of the COVID-19 spread.
The 32nd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo will take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021.
