Minsk holds groundbreaking ceremony for new football stadium, swimming pool

MINSK, 30 June (BelTA) – A ceremony to launch the construction of the national football stadium and a world-class swimming pool was held at Dinamo Stadium in Minsk on 30 June, BelTA has learned.

The sports facilities will be built with the help of China's technical and economic assistance. The construction of the stadium is 40 months and that of the pool is 36 months.

“The unique objects, the construction of which we are launching today and in the planning decisions of which the leaders of the two states took part in, will be the testament of the Belarusian-Chinese friendship. They will be also a clear demonstration of China's technological and economic capabilities for Belarus' neighbors in western Eurasia,” Belarus' First Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Snopkov said.

“Such sports facilities are built for a nation to learn to develop and to win. We wish new victories to our athletes and peoples," the first deputy prime minister added.

According to him, China will earmark about $240 million for the construction of the facilities.

“Today we gave a start to the construction. The sites are ready, the general contractors have been selected. It should be noted that the work on the technical preparation of these projects did not stop for a moment, despite the epidemiological restrictions. The work has been organized online. Belarusian and Chinese specialists worked in a disciplined, responsible manner,” Nikolai Snopkov noted.

Chinese Ambassador to Belarus Cui Qiming noted that Belarus and China are good partners and friends who trust each other. “Comprehensive strategic partnership, mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Belarus are maintained at the highest level. Both countries are true all-weather partners who strongly support each other on the issues affecting the main interests and key problems,” the ambassador said.

The national football stadium will be located within the boundaries of Independence Avenue - Vaneyeva Street - Dolgobrodskaya Street. The Belarusian side has already completed the preparation of the construction site. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 33,000 and will be able to host European and World Cup qualifiers, the matches of the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup.

Functionally, the stadium includes a canopy, stands, facilities for spectators, athletes, media, commercial space, underground parking for 150 places, a playroom and other zones.

The pool will be located within the boundaries of Domashevskaya Street – Kalvariyskaya Street – Kharkovskaya Street – Zagorodny pereulok. It will comply with the international requirements and FINA standards and will be able to host official international competitions ranging from European championships to world championships in swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo.

The sports complex will be divided into zones for competitions, rest, warm-ups and practice sessions. It will be open to professional athletes and also residents of Minsk.
