Minsk European Games seen as key milestone on the road to 2020 Olympics

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – The 2nd European Games is a key event in the four-year cycle leading into the 32nd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020, Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said at the board meeting of the ministry in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

The minister noted that the preparations for the 2nd European Games 2019 are based on the program approved by the Sport and Tourism Ministry and the National Olympic Committee of Belarus. Using the recommendations of the federations the Sport and Tourism Ministry has drawn up a list of Belarusian athletes who will be training for the games. It includes 290 athletes in 23 disciplines in 15 sports included in the program of the 2nd European Games and the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

With regard to the medal prospects at the 2nd European Games, Belarus is hoping for medals in sambo, kayak and canoe, rifle shooting, rhythmic gymnastics, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, acrobatics, trampoline and athletics. Belarusian athletes also have great chances to grace the podium in boxing, cycling, judo, table tennis, karate, and beach soccer, Sergei Kovalchuk said.

According to the minister, the competitions in badminton, 3x3 basketball, boxing, cycling, judo, karate, athletes, archery, shooting, and table tennis will serve as qualifiers for the 2020 Olympics.

The 2nd European Games will be held at 29 facilities on 21-30 June. Taking part in the competitions will be about 4,000 athletes from 50 countries.
