Minister: Minsk Half Marathon gains more popularity

MINSK, 24 December (BelTA) - The Minsk Half Marathon is gaining more popularity every year, Belarus Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk told the media as he attended the ceremony to honor the Minsk Half Marathon winners in Minsk on 23 December, BelTA has learned.

The minister noted that 2019 was a rich year for sporting events. “Belarus hosted the 2nd European Games, the Europe v USA athletics match. The Minsk Half Marathon holds a special place in the sports calendar. Year after year it is gaining more and more popularity. Athletics is the health of the nation and the basis for many sports,” Sergei Kovalchuk said.

Chairman of the Belarusian Athletics Federation Vadim Devyatovsky noted that the Minsk Half Marathon has achieved great results within five years. “Being part of the marathon is a big deal for many people. We all did a very good job to make the marathon a great event," he said.

Members of the Dream Team and partners of the event were also awarded during the ceremony to honor the Minsk Half Marathon winners.

This year's winners are Eritrea's Afewerki Berhane and Nina Savina of Belarus.

In 2019, the Minsk Half Marathon was held for the fifth time. It featured 40,000 runners from 68 countries. The half marathon received the Road Race Silver Label from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The prize pool was $60,000.
