Minister: EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2020 will encourage sport development in Belarus

MINSK, 24 January (BelTA) – The EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2020, Women will add a new impetus to the development of this sport in Belarus, Belarusian Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said as he met with President of the European Hockey Federation (EHF) Marijke Fleuren on 24 January, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Sport and Tourism Ministry.

Sergei Kovalchuk told the EHF head about the country's sport policy, including youth sports. In his words, Belarus' sport infrastructure has changed a lot recently. New arenas, stadiums and gyms have been built. Great conditions have been created to host competitions of any level. “I am confident that the EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2020 will add a new impetus to the development of this interesting and spectacular sport in our country,” the minister said.

The EHF president shared her impressions of Minsk: “You have a wonderful city, great sport facilities, friendly people. It is great to see your women's hockey team progress and perform well. I have no doubts that the EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2020 will be held at the highest level.”

The EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2020, Women will take place at the Minsk Palace of Sports on 24-26 January. The tournament is the second biggest event after the FIH Indoor World Cup. The competitions are featuring eight European teams: Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. The competition will be a qualifying event for the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup 2021. The Belarusian women's indoor hockey team is a two-time European medalist. The team won bronze medals in 2016 and 2018. Belarus placed third at the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup 2018.
