Kiryl Relikh: Emotional control the most difficult side of preparations for WBA championship match

MINSK, 15 March (BelTA) – Maintaing emotional control was the most difficult thing about preparations for the WBA world super lightweight championship match against Rances Barthelemy, Belarusian boxer Kiryl Relikh told a press conference, BelTA has learned.

After winning the world champion title in the USA, Kiryl Relikh plans to continue preparing for the upcoming battles. “It is often harder to train rather than fight. It was important (and very difficult) to prepare myself mentally for the match against Rances Barthelemy. My physical shape did not concern me. I was only relying on myself,” the Belarusian boxer said.

I have showed the WBA champion title only to his wife and journalists, Kiryl Relikh added. In his words, he has considered taking part in Olympics but will now focus on the professional career after the recent victory.

The boxer confessed he is a Belarusian to his fingertips, although he has received offers to change the citizenship. “I have never thought about it. All the achievements, all the close ones are here. This is why I will remain a Belarusian,” Kiryl Relikh underlined.

Kiryl Relikh's victory is the biggest success of the Belarusian sport in the last 12 years when Sergei Lyakhovich claimed the WBO heavyweight title, added Chairman of the Belarusian Boxing Federation Gennady Narkevich. He also recalled the accomplishments of other Belarusian athletes: Sergei Khomitsky, Yuri Romanov, Magomed Aripgadzhiyev, and Sergei Gulyakevich.
