Kiryienka: Only positive impressions from competition

MINSK, 23 June (BelTA) - Men's Road Race of the 2nd European Games has left only good impressions, 2015 world champion Belarusian Vasil Kiryienka told the media, BelTA has learned.

“I have only good impressions from the competition. Everything was convenient. It is just that the viewers could have been allowed closer to the route,” the athlete said.

“I think many people discovered something new. People greeted the athletes very warmly and specifically those from Belarus,” Vasil Kiryienka added.

With regard to today's race, the athlete was expecting a more positive result. “Winning is always hard. But I had hoped that Sasha [Aleksander Riabushenko who came in fourth] would finish in the top three at least. I did everything I could to help my teammate and I think many things worked out. It is just that the finish did not go out as we hoped,” Vasil Kiryienka said.

As BelTA reported earlier, the Belarusian cyclists did not make it to the podium in the Men's Road Race at the 2nd European Games on 23 June. Throughout the race Belarusian Aleksandr Riabushenko had a chance to finish in top three but did not luck out in the last meters and remained in the fourth position. Italian Davide Ballerini captured gold as he covered 180km through the streets of Minsk in 4:10.04. Silver went to Estonian Alo Jakin, bronze to Daniel Auer of Austria.
