IOC to finalize Tokyo Olympics plan by September

MINSK, 11 June (BelTA) – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) plans to finalize a new plan for the 2020 Summer Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games by September, taking into account the situation with the coronavirus pandemic, TASS informs.

The IOC and the 2020 Tokyo Organizing Committee will consider ways to cut costs on more than 200 items. Later, the IOC will present the preliminary Olympic plan to the sports federations. Federations will need to discuss matters such as measures to prevent the spread of the infection, the appropriate number of spectators and conditions for the athletes.

Last week, Yoshiro Mori, President of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike met to confirm that they would work together to optimize and simplify the competition because of the coronavirus pandemic situation. The Japanese side is considering the option of mandatory coronavirus testing not only for athletes and team members, but also for all fans. There may be restrictions on the movement of athletes outside the Olympic Village where they will be accommodated.

The Olympic Games in Tokyo were to be held from 24 July to 9 August 2020. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Games were postponed by a year and will take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021.
