IOC summit confident in Tokyo, Beijing Olympics success

MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) – The leading representatives of the Olympic movement, who gathered for the online 9th Olympic Summit on 12 December, expressed certainty that the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo and the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing would be a success, BelTA learned from the National Olympic Committee of Belarus.

A wide range of issues was discussed at the summit, including support of Olympic and Paralympic movements, the upcoming Games in Tokyo in summer 2021 and Beijing in winter 2022, and also the international fight against doping.

The summit participants expressed confidence in the successful organization of safe and secure Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, starting on 23 July 2021, and conveyed gratitude to the organizing committee for the work done.

The summit participants agreed that the top priority remains the health and safety of all participants. The summit participants took note of the COVID-19 countermeasures and the IOC role in the world's pro-vaccination campaign.

President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Witold Banka spoke about the reforms of the Agency's governance. It was also stressed that global cooperation between WADA, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and international federations needs to be strengthened.

Chairperson of the IOC Athletes' Commission Kirsty Coventry updated the summitters about an ongoing wide-ranging dialogue with athletes around the world on how to ensure support for athletes via the platform Athlete265.

The International Olympic Committee also attentively follows the development of cybersport. The summit also highlighted the issues on the Olympic Agenda 2020, a full report of which will be evaluated at the 137th IOC Session in Athens in March 2021.
