IIHF denies possible relocation of 2020 World Championship

MINSK, 5 March (BelTA) – The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has officially denied the possibility of relocating the 2020 IIHF World Championship from Switzerland to other country, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation.

A number of media outlets have been recently spreading information on the possible cancellation or relocation of the 2020 IIHF World Championship. Due to an increased number of requests from media representatives, the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation addressed the IIHF office to clarify the situation.

According to IIHF spokesman Adam Steiss, who responded to the request of the Belarusian side, the option of relocating the tournament to Belarus is not considered. The International Ice Hockey Federation still plans to hold the competition in Switzerland.

Belarus had not addressed the IIHF with a proposal to host the 2020 Ice Hockey World Championship.

Due to a coronavirus threat, the Swiss government banned any public events including sport ones with the audience exceeding 1,000 people. The ban has been introduced through 15 March. The 2020 IIHF World Championship is due to take place in Zurich and Lausanne on 8-24 May.
