Gateshead Diamond League meeting canceled

MINSK, 24 July (BelTA) - The fifth Diamond League meeting due to be held in Gateshead, the UK has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, BelTA learned from the official website of the tournament.

“We announce that the Gateshead meeting due to take place this September, has now been officially canceled. The government measures brought in earlier this year due to COVID-19 have ultimately prevented the progress of the much-needed upgrade of the facilities at the Gateshead International Stadium. Time has ultimately defeated us to ensure that international athletes can not only compete in a safe manner but also to their full potential in world class facilities,” a joint statement with Gateshead Council said.

The athletics calendar has been badly-affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diamond League meetings in Eugene and Paris have also been canceled.

The Diamond League calendar still includes tournaments in Monaco (14 August), Stockholm (23 August), Lausanne (2 September), Brussels (4 September), Rome/Naples (17 September), Shanghai (19 September) and Doha (9 October).
