FISU: The 2nd European Games gave momentum to university sports

MINSK, 24 December (BelTA) – Large-scale projects such as the 2nd European Games, add impetus to the development of university sports, President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Oleg Matytsin said as he met with First Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus Viktor Lukashenko at the National Olympic Committee of Belarus on 23 December, BelTA learned from the press service of the committee.

The FISU head stressed that Belarus has always paid close attention to sport development and that his federation is interested in expanding cooperation. “Minsk was a great host of the 2nd European Games. I would like to say that volunteers, who helped at the university competitions before, demonstrated their best. Such large-scale projects give impetus to the development of university sports. The International University Sports Federation is always ready to share its resources and best practices with Belarusian colleagues in the sector,” Oleg Matytsin said.

Viktor Lukashenko, for his part, congratulated Oleg Matytsin on re-election as FISU president in November. He also praised the successful hosting of the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk. “The International University Sports Federation has huge experience in hosting large competitions, personnel training. Ahead of the 2nd European Games FISU provided assistance in training volunteers who showed their best during this large-scale sport event. Belarus is interested in more active cooperation with the International University Sports Federation, adopting experience,” he said.

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) is a sports organization founded to promote university sports. The federation organizes summer and winter universiades and world university championships. FISU comprises 15 committees in different areas of activity.

FISU cooperates with international sports organizations such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
