European Judo Championships postponed to November

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – The European Judo Union (EJU) has approved new dates for the continental competitions in 2020, BelTA learned from the official website of the organization.

The European Judo Championships will take place in Prague, the Czech Republic on 8-10 November. The tournament will be a qualifying event ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. Tickets sold in May will be valid for November.

The tournament was to take place on 1-3 May. It was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Czech Republic last hosted the European Judo Championships in 1991.

In 1962 Aleksandr Lukashevich (Vitebsk native) was the first Belarusian to win a medal at the European Judo Championships. He claimed silver at the competitions in Essen, Germany. Vitaly Pesnyak from Baranovichi won the champion title three times (1983-1985). Maryna Slutskaya of Minsk claimed gold twice (2017, 2019). The European champion title was also won by Rashad Mamedov (1997), Anatoly Laryukov (2002), Siarhei Shundzikau (2006), Andrei Kazusenok (2009), and Ihar Makarau (2010).
