European Figure Skating Championships officially open in Minsk

MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) – An official opening ceremony of the ISU European Figure Skating Championships has taken place in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Attending the opening ceremony were First Vice President of the International Skating Union (ISU) Alexander Lakernik, Belarus' Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk, Minsk Mayor Anatoly Sivak.

“It is a great honor for our country to host such prestigious events. We are doing our best to conduct the European Championships at the highest level and to meet all expectations of coaches, athletes and fans. I hope that Minsk Arena will be the place where new stars will shine,” Sergei Kovalchuk underlined.

Over 100 skaters are taking part in the competitions. The championships kicked off today with the ladies' short program. The first day will end with the short program in pairs.

Belarus will be represented by Yakau Zenko in the men's singles, and Anna Kublikova and Yuri Gulitsky in ice dance.

The championships will end on 26 January. A gala performance of champions and prizewinners will take place on 27 January.
