Domracheva drops out of 2nd European Games fire lighting ceremony due to illness

MINSK, 2 May (BelTA) – Due to illness the four-time Olympic champion Darya Domracheva will be unable to participate in the ceremony to light the fire of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019 in Rome on 3 May. The relevant statement was made by CEO of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC) George Katulin at a press conference on 2 May, BelTA has learned.

The ceremony to light the Flame of Peace relay race torch will take place in the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome. Renowned Belarusian athletes, four-time Olympic champions Darya Domracheva and Yelena Belova, Olympic champions Yulia Nestsiarenka and Uladzislau Hancharou were initially supposed to take part in the ceremony.

“Unfortunately, due to her illness Darya Domracheva will be unable to participate in the ceremony,” George Katulin said.

The 2nd European Games relay race Flame of Peace will start in Rome on 3 May and will go through 55 populated localities in eight countries (Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Czechia, Poland, and Belarus). Its length will be 7,700km. As many as 450 torchbearers, 100 volunteers, and ten flame keepers will take part in the fire relay race. The flame will be taken to Mont Blanc, will see various places of interest in countries along the way, and will arrive in Belarus on 12 May. In Belarus the torch will be taken to the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park. It will travel along the Augustow Canal, will visit country estates of Tadeusz Kosciuszko and Michal Oginski, castles in Mir and Novogrudok, and salt mines.

The relay race will take 50 days and will end with the lighting of the Olympic fire in the Dinamo Stadium, the central venue of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019. Minsk will host the 2nd European Games on 21-30 June. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete for 199 medal sets in 15 sports.
