BSU student wins silver at Sambo World Cup

MINSK, 24 December (BelTA) – Maksim Likhovets, a third-year student of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of the Belarusian State University (BSU), claimed silver at the Sambo World Cup “A. Kharlampiev Memorial”, BelTA learned from the university's press service.

“The competitions finished on 19 December in Moscow. Athletes competed in 27 weight categories in three disciplines: men's, women's and combat sambo. The BSU student made part of the Belarusian national team in the +100kg weight category. The Belarusian athlete faced Russia's Alsim Chernoskulov,” the press service said.

Maksim Likhovets is a master of sports, a member of the Belarusian national team and the BSU team, a holder of the scholarship of the Presidential Sports Club. The student has also won bronze medals of the World Junior Championships, the 2019 Universiade and the Belarus Sambo Championships.

The tournament brought together about 300 athletes and representatives of the national federations from 15 countries: Belarus, Venezuela, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Colombia, China, Morocco, Mexico, Moldova, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Uzbekistan and France. Belarus ranked sixth in the team's overall standings. Belarus won seven medals at the Sambo World Cup “A. Kharlampiev Memorial”: three silver and four bronze medals.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Sports of Russia, Moscow Department of Sports and Tourism, International Sambo Federation, Russian Sambo Federation and Moscow Sambo Federation.

The Sambo World Cup “A. Kharlampiev Memorial” was instituted in 1980 in Moscow. The competitions were named in honor of Anatoly Kharlampiev, one of the sambo founders.
