MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian national modern pentathlon team that had a great season were honored at the Sport and Tourism Ministry on 18 October, BelTA learned from the press service of the ministry.
The successes of the Belarusian pentathletes this season inspire optimism. Now it is important not to lose the gained positions, stressed Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk. He congratulated athletes, coaches, doctors of the national team, and workers of the modern pentathlon federation on high results and noted that more important competitions are still ahead and there is a need to train even harder.
In 2018, Belarusian pentathletes won 20 (eight gold, five silver and seven bronze) medals at international competitions.
Anastasia Prokopenko won two gold medals at the 2018 UIPM World Championship in Mexico (in the individual event and in the women's relay together with Irina Prosentsova). During the 2018 UIPM World Championships in Mexico, Anastasia Prokopenko was awarded a bronze medal of the Olympic Games in Beijing. The bronze winner Victoria Tereshchuk of Ukraine re-tested positively for anabolic steroid turinabol.
Anastasia Prokopenko and senior coach of the national team Mikhail Prokopenko were awarded honorary diplomas of the Sport and Tourism Ministry. The ministry's diplomas also went to head coach Valdemar Darius de Makai, a large group of athletes, coaches and specialists.
Attending the event was Minister of Transport and Communications, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Belarusian Modern Pentathlon Federation Anatoly Sivak, who also presented athletes with awards and gifts.
