Belarus to host national Olympic sailing championship in September

MINSK, 22 July (BelTA) – The Belarusian Olympic sailing championship will take place on 16-20 September, BelTA learned from chief coach of the national team Oleg Spolan.

“The Belarusian Olympic sailing championship will be held from 16 to 20 September. However, the first competition after a long break for the Belarusian athletes will be the National Spartakiad of the Children's and Youth Sports School, which began on 22 July. The Olympic Youth Days will be held in August. Plans are in place to host the country's youth championship in early September. Today one of the priorities of the National Sailing Federation is the development of the talent pool which representatives will be able to show their best at the Paris Olympics 2024. We have enough promising athletes,” the coach said.

Speaking about training in the conditions of the pandemic, the coach of the Belarusian national team added: “Back in February we were training and competing, having won medals at the Andalusian regatta. Since March we have been unable to go anywhere. Almost all sailing competitions have been canceled. The international competitions start to resume gradually. However for reasons beyond our control we cannot take part in them yet. We continue training at home, because no one has canceled the Olympic Games. We already have an international competition calendar. The European Open Championships have been postponed to late October - November 2020, including licensed competitions in Laser Standard (men) and RS:X (women),” he said.

Belarus has so far earned two Olympic berths in Laser Radial (women) and RS:X (men). The Olympic Games in Japan will take place on 23 July – 8 August 2021.
