Belarus team off to Nicosia for 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifier

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – The Belarusian team have departed for Nicosia for the opener at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualification against Cyprus, BelTA has learned.

Head coach of the Belarusian team Rostislav Vergun named 12 players for the forthcoming match: Aliaksandr Pustahvar, Andrei Stabrouski, Aliaksei Trastsinetski, Yauheni Beliankou, Vitaly Lutych, Maksim Salash, Uladzimir Verameyenka (all – BC Tsmoki Minsk), Benjamin Pavel Dudu (BC Borisfen), Artsiom Parakhouski (SIG Strasbourg), Aliaksei Semianiuk, Kiryl Sitnik (both – BC Vostok 65, Russia), Roman Rubinshteyn (Hapoel Jerusalem B.C.).

Group A will also feature Portugal v Albania on 20 February. Belarus will first play at home on 24 February when they host Portugal. Belarus will also face Albania on 26 November and Cyprus on 30 November on the home ground. Belarus will play the other matches in 2021 – against Portugal on 18 February and Albania on 21 February.

Group B will feature Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland and Kosovo.

Two best teams from each group will advance to the next stage of the qualifying tournament. The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will feature 32 teams.This will be the first World Cup to be hosted by three countries: Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan.
