Belarus' team getting ready for Mondial 2020 at Mogilev aeroclub

MOGILEV, 4 August (BelTA) - The Mogilev aeroclub has become the training base for the Belarusian national parachuting team in the preparation for Mondial 2020 (2021 FAI World Parachuting Championships) which is due to take at the airfield Tanay in Kemerovo Oblast on 7-21 August, BelTA learned from head coach of the team Aleksandr Gerasimenko.

“Sixteen parachutists from the main and reserve squads are training in Mogilev. Each of them performs eight jumps on acrobatic flying and accuracy landing per day. The training camp is already in its second week. Athletes are trained both physically and psychologically. Our goal is to show our best at the competitions,” said Aleksandr Gerasimenko.

Belarus will be represented at the competitions by five male five female and two junior athletes. The average age of the athletes is 35 years. Skydiving is a seasonal sport, which directly depends on the weather, so the period of training is limited. Training is held from January to October and includes fitness training, exercises on coordination and reaction.

“Acrobatic flying is performed from the height of 2,200m. Performance starts in the 10th-12th second of freefall after acceleration, which speed can reach 250kmh. Accuracy landing is performed from the height of 800-1,000 meters. In this type of classic parachuting athletes are expected to show their skills in managing the canopy in order to land in a precisely defined place (target) and hit the 2cm dead center with the heel of their shoes. Such a jump lasts up to 5 minutes,” the head coach said.

The World Parachuting Championships in Russia will be an important event in the career of every Belarusian athlete. Such competitions are held once every four years and are called the Mondial. This is the common name for the world championships, which include competitions in all parachuting disciplines. It includes formation skydiving and canopy acrobatics, speed skydiving, canopy piloting; classical, artistic and wingsuit disciplines. The upcoming championships are expected to bring together more than 1,000 athletes.
