Belarus earns 71 Tokyo Olympics berths

MINSK, 23 July (BelTA) – Seventy-one Belarusian athletes have so far secured their spots in 15 sports of the Tokyo Olympics, BelTA learned from the Olympic movement department of the National Olympic Committee.

Qualifying tournaments will soon be resumed to continue through June 2021. Belarusian athletes plan to earn some 100 Olympic berths.

The Olympic flame will be lit at the upgraded National Stadium in Tokyo on 23 July 2021. Competitions will be held at 43 facilities (of them eight newly built, 25 built earlier, and ten temporary venues). The new National Stadium has already hosted first official competitions.

The 32nd Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021. The Games will feature 339 medal events in 33 sports. The Olympic program will include baseball/softball, karate, surfing, rock climbing, and skateboarding. Under the decision of the International Olympic Committee, the Games were moved from 2020 to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is the first such delay in the Games' 124-year modern history.
