Belarus earn 87 Tokyo Olympics berths

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – A total of 87 Belarusian athletes have qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Belarus' Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko said at a joint meeting of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

“The pandemic has made adjustments to the preparations for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The main thing was to continue preparations for the Olympics while keeping track of the health of the athletes and the staff,” said Igor Petrishenko.

According to him, the Belarusian athletes are approaching the final stage of the preparation for the Games. “All necessary conditions have been created for the athletes competing for the Games qualification. As of today a total of 87 Belarusian athletes have clinched Olympic spots in 17 sports. After the cancellation of the majority of the international competitions, the selection for some sports will continue through the end of June. Our task is to show our best at the Olympics,” the deputy prime minister said.
