MINSK, 16 May (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 51 progressed to her first Internazionali BNL d'Italia quarterfinal since 2015 after Spain's world number 19 Garbine Muguruza was forced to retire due to a left thigh injury, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian won the first set 6-4. In the second, with Victoria Azarenka's leading 3-1, the Spanish player was forced to withdraw due to an injury.
The Belarusian cruised past China's world number 48 Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-1 in the opener. In the second round the Belarusian battled through Ukraine's world number 6 Elina Svitolina 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Victoria Azarenka will next play either Czech Republic's world number 7 Karolina Pliskova or world number 37 Sofia Kenin from the United States.
