Athletes from Belarus, Russia, France to open 2023 cycling season in Brest

BREST, 6 April (BelTA) - The open national competitions in memory of former USSR champion in road cycling Evgeny Malets will take place in Brest on 6-8 April, BelTA learned from Deputy Chairman of the Brest Oblast Cycling Federation, chief judge of the competitions Nikolai Khevuk.

The event will feature 270 cyclists, from those born in 2010 to professional and retired athletes. Traditionally the race features the country's best athletes – regional teams, the team of the National Olympic Training Center and the national team. Taking part in the competitions will also be the Olympic Hopes team from St. Petersburg and an athlete from France (makes part of a professional club).

“This is the first spring sport event of the year in Belarus. As the country's warmest region we open the 2023 road cycling season. Athletes show how they have progressed over the winter to adjust their training plans. In this regard, the tournament is very important. Some teams came here almost a month ago, making part of the training camp for 10-15 days to train in warm and comfortable conditions,” Nikolai Khevuk said.

The tournament will include individual 5km and 10km races and a group race in the agro-town of Ostromechevo, Brest District (63km for boys, 43km for girls, 125km for men and 85km for women). The tournament will wrap up on 8 April with one of the most spectacular road cycling events - a high-speed criterium race around the park of the 1000th anniversary of Brest.

The Evgeny Malets Memorial Tournament will be held for the 51st time.
