Yanka Kupala honored on commemorative plaque unveiled in Bratislava

MINSK, 12 December (BelTA) – A commemorative plaque for First People's Poet of Belarus Yanka Kupala has been unveiled in Radisson Blu Carlton Hotel, the oldest and most prestigious hotels of Bratislava, BelTA learned from the Belarusian embassy in Slovakia.

The Belarusian poet stayed at the hotel in 1935 as he visited Czechoslovakia as part of a delegation of Soviet writers. The inauguration ceremony was organized by the Belarusian embassy in Slovakia and the Yanka Kupala State Literary Museum in cooperation with the hotel owners and administration.

Addressing the ceremony, head of the Belarusian diplomatic mission Igor Leshchenya said that the history of contacts between nations is a basis for cooperation between any states. “This means that the relations between Belarus and Slovakia have a solid foundation. Belarusians and Slovaks are Slavic people. We have similar languages, culture and mindset. If we talk to each other using just the Belarusian and Slovak languages, we can understand a lot. The history of the establishment of Belarusians and Slovaks as the independent nations almost coincides in time. Therefore, any steps that attract attention to the history of our cultural ties and assist their further development are of great importance,” the diplomatic mission said. The ambassador stressed that this is the first commemorative plaque honoring a Belarusian in Slovakia.

The director of the Yanka Kupala State Literary Museum Yelena Leshkovich highlighted the importance of Yanka Kupala's theme in the bilateral cultural relations. The big events to celebrate the founder of the Belarusian literature included a joint tour of cultural figures of the two countries along the Yanka Kupala route in Slovakia and the publication of a collection of poems in Slovak with the support of the Union of Slovak Writers.

Other speakers at the ceremony were Marian Servatka, an advocate of Yanka Kupala's art in Slovakia, Slovakia's ambassador to Belarus from 2008 to 2013, and sculptor Pavel Voinitsky, the author of the commemorative plaque.

The ceremony to unveil the commemorative plaque was attended by Olga Nachtmannova, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, a graduate of the Belarusian State University, Mr Robert Madei, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission of the National Council of Slovakia and head of the group of friendship with the Belarusian parliament, and also representatives of ministries and departments, public organizations, creative unions of Slovakia, and the diplomatic corps.
