U.S. citizen granted refugee status in Belarus

BREST, 22 March (BelTA) – The U.S. citizen Evan Neumann has been granted refugee status in Belarus. He was issued the relevant document in the Citizenship and Migration Office of the Brest Oblast Police Department on 22 March, BelTA has learned.

Evan Neumann said: “I feel safe in Belarus. I am calm, I like it here. Today I have mixed feelings. I am glad because Belarus has shown concern for me. I am upset because I am in a situation when problems occurred in my native country.”

The man had to leave the USA because he participated in riots and faced politically motivated charges. Chief of the Citizenship and Migration Office of the Brest Oblast Police Department Yuri Brazinsky said: “He illegally crossed the Belarusian border in August 2021. He came to us from Ukraine's territory. He explained he had noticed he was being tailed, started fearing for his life and health. He took a map, a backpack with things and crossed the border in the responsibility area of the Pinsk branch of the Belarusian border service where he was immediately detained. He explained why he had done it and had filed the relevant petition.”

Citizenship and migration personnel accepted the necessary documents and took care of the foreigner's accommodation. The Internal Affairs Ministry granted the refugee status to the U.S. citizen.

Evan Neumann got himself familiar with Brest over the course of half a year. He now has favorite cafes in the city and likes taking walks along Sovetskaya Street, the Mukhavets River bank, and in city parks. He would like to spend more time in the Brest Fortress. He intends to stay in Brest for a while. Later on he intends to travel to other parts of Belarus, including Minsk, in order to plan his future strategy. He is considering the possibility of doing business again. The man dreams of bringing his family to Belarus. In his words, it is up to his wife, who takes care of raising their kids.
