UN: Solidarity is key to sustainable and peaceful development of society

MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) - Solidarity is the key to sustainable and peaceful development of society, UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Rasul Baghirov said said at a meeting of the Council for Sustainable Development dedicated to the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day at the National Center for Life Safety at the Emergencies Ministry, BelTA learned.

“The United Nations places individuals, their lives, well-being and development at the center of its work. This commitment to humanism is evident as we remember the Chernobyl disaster,” Rasul Baghirov noted. “Chernobyl is first and foremost a story of people. Those who died, lost their homes, their familiar way of life and their health. It is important to preserve and pass on the memory of these people and their stories to young people and future generations and also to do everything possible to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again”.

According to him, the Chernobyl disaster showed that in the conditions of common misfortune people rally together, showing compassion and solidarity. “People from different countries came to help, both in terms of clean-up efforts and also subsequent rehabilitation of the affected territories and people. Today, solidarity is key to sustainable and peaceful development of society. As the world continues to face disasters, catastrophes and armed conflicts, open dialogue is vital. At the same time, modern scientific achievements and technological progress open up new opportunities to improve security, environmental sustainability, human health and production,” the UN resident coordinator noted.

“The UN Country Team provides support for ecosystem restoration, research and assistance to people living in Chernobyl-affected regions. Within the framework of the cooperation program for 2026-2030, we are ensuring the continuity of our work in the development of both the regions affected by the Chernobyl disaster and the country as a whole,” Rasul Baghirov added.
