UN official in Belarus: UN advocates greater tolerance, respect in society

MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) – The United Nations Organization pushes for a greater tolerance and respect in the society, UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki said at an event dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, BelTA has learned.

Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki warned against forgetting the lessons of history. She pointed to the growing antisemitism and emphasized the need to join forces on the international arena to maintain peace.

Chairman of the Board of the Minsk-based  Johannes Rau International Centre for Education and Exchange (IBB) Viktor Balakirev noted that 27 January is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the prisoners of the Nazi camp Auschwitz. This date reminds of the horrors of the war and tells people never to repeat anything like that.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed on 27 January every year to commemorate the tragedy of the Holocaust that resulted in the deaths of 6 million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The day of 27 January was chosen for a reason. On this day in 1945 the Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp was liberated by the Red Army.

The event dedicated to International Holocaust Remembrance Day was held at the Minsk-based  Johannes Rau International Centre for Education and Exchange. Taking part in it were representatives of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Union of Belarusian Jewish Public Associations and Communities, as well as the ambassadors of Austria, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Israel, the head of the EU Delegation in Belarus, as well as former ghetto prisoners. The event was organized by the Minsk-based Johannes Rau International Centre for Education and Exchange, the international public association Understanding, the Jewish Religious Community of Belarus, the Religious Union of Progressive Jewish Communities in Belarus, the Union of Belarusian Jewish Public Associations and Communities, the Leonid Levin History Workshop, and the Museum of Jewish History and Culture of Belarus.
