MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – If given the opportunity, Ukrainians would choose to move to peaceful Belarus, former Prime Minister of Ukraine (2010-2014) Nikolai Azarov said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
Nikolai Azarov highlighted the fact that Belarusians have never harbored hostility towards Ukrainians. “For many years before the coup (I know this for certain), the attitude of Ukrainians towards Belarusians was simply excellent. I have never encountered hostility from Belarusians, especially from Aleksandr Grigoryevich [Lukashenko]. I had the opportunity to meet with him, and not just once. I always observed an absolutely friendly attitude,” Nikolai Azarov said.
Furthermore, the former prime minister added that Belarus and Ukraine had normal trade and economic relations: “We cooperated for mutual benefit, regularly convened intergovernmental commissions on trade and economic cooperation, and not only that. We also held cultural days. In short, we had absolutely normal relations.”
Earlier, while opening the renovated bridge over the Pripyat River, Aleksandr Lukashenko said that Belarus is ready to admit more migrants from Ukraine. "We are open. “We are open. Please, come, Ukrainians. We will be happy to welcome you. We will provide your families and your children with the same quality of life as Belarusians have in terms of education and healthcare,” the head of state said.
“If Ukrainians could travel abroad, they would move to Belarus. But they don't have such an opportunity because the country has turned into a concentration camp,” Nikolai Azarov stated. “I am convinced that if ordinary Ukrainians had the chance to move to peaceful Belarus, they would do so."
