Transboundary cycling track to connect Augustow Canal, Belovezhskaya Pushcha under consideration

GRODNO, 9 December (BelTA) – A transboundary circular cycling track may connect the Augustow Canal and Belovezhskaya Pushcha, representatives of the Sport and Tourism Office of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee told BelTA.

The track will be located on both sides of the Belarusian-Polish border. It will be kind of a ring that will allow travelers on bicycles to visit two popular tourist attractions located in Belarus and Poland. Work to implement the project may begin in 2020. The creation of the new bicycle track was discussed at a meeting of representatives of the Sport and Tourism Office of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee, the Polish embassy in Belarus, the union of Podlaskie Voivodeship municipalities, and Podlaskie Voivodeship commercial entities specializing in tourism.

The meeting focused on the promotion of tourism in the Augustow Canal area, in particular, the establishment of a tourism cluster in the Belarusian part of the canal, the development and implementation of entrepreneurship initiatives near the canal and the town of Sopotskin. The emergence of new interesting attractions will make the Augustow Canal more appealing. Apart from that, it will be a boon for the development of the region. It will allow creating new jobs. The sides also discussed the joint promotion of the Augustow Canal brand on international tourism markets.

Positive experience of cooperation is already available. The transboundary cycling track AugustVelo as long as about 50km was opened in summer 2019. It connects Grodno, the Belarusian part and the Polish part of the canal. The track was created as part of the project designed to support the development of tourism entrepreneurship by developing Grodno Oblast infrastructure. The project was implemented by the Sport and Tourism Office of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee and the union of Podlaskie Voivodeship municipalities within the framework of the Polish Aid program. The tourism infrastructure center in Sopotskin is being renovated as part of the project. The center will get a workshop and a bicycle rental office. Another three bicycle rental and maintenance offices will be opened in the Augustow Canal area. Apart from that, 100 bicycles have been acquired for tourists. Tourists will be able to rent them during the next season.
