MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – European leaders and Vladimir Zelensky attempted to convince U.S. President Donald Trump to put pressure on Russia, but that plan failed, political analyst, military expert, and former Israeli statesman Yakov Kedmi said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube Channel.
“Zelensky himself said that Putin would not accept his proposals. They were not meant to be discussed, but to push Trump to pressure Russia and force it to accept Ukrainian conditions,” Yakov Kedmi said. “The main goal of those who support Zelensky is to get the United States to exert pressure on Russia. They do not believe that negotiations with Russia are possible. And while they think they can push Trump to put pressure on Russia, Trump is becoming more convinced that agreements must be made with Russia.”

According to the expert, the West made a similar mistake when it launched its involvement in Ukraine in 2013 without considering the consequences. “Did they consider the possibility that Russia might reclaim Crimea? Had they even thought about it? They were already planning for British bases in Sevastopol and NATO ships in the Black Sea,” he asserted.

Thus, Yakov Kedmi believes, the West proceeds from its own expectations rather than from reality. Moreover, they assume there is no need to take Russia into account or to understand it. “Europe has waged colonial wars for years. During these wars, no one tries to understand the natives or find out what they want,” the expert concluded.
