Sosnowsky's hogweed colonies in Minsk reduced almost 9 times since 2011

MINSK, 2 June (BelTA) - Since 2011 the areas occupied by Sosnowsky's hogweed in Minsk have been reduced almost 9 times - from 242 hectares to 28 hectares, Stepan Dubnitsky, the head of natural resources and environmental protection at the Minsk City Hall, said at a press conference in Minsk on 2 June, BelTA has learned.

“Every year Minsk takes measures to weed out the invasive species. Active work has been underway since 2011. During this period, the areas invaded by this plant has been reduced significantly - from 242 to 28 hectares,” Stepan Dubnitsky noted.

The largest colonies are found in Zavodskoy District (13 hectares), Leninsky District (7 hectares), Oktyabrsky District (5 hectares). They account for 95% of the total Sosnowsky's hogweed colonies.

In 2020 Minsk is set to completely root out all small Sosnowsky's hogweed colonies in all administrative districts. The task has been set to eradicate the, in Pervomaisky, Frunzensky and Tsentralny districts of the Belarusian capital. More than Br90,000 has been earmarked from the Minsk budget for these measures.

“The measures produce a positive effect. We need to continue regular systematic work to eradicate Sosnowsky's hogweed in Minsk as soon as possible,” Stepan Dubnitsky noted.
