Seventeen COVID-19 survivors donate plasma in Grodno

GRODNO, 20 May (BelTA) – Seventeen people have donated blood plasma in Grodno Oblast, with 20 more on the waiting list, Chief Physician of the Grodno Regional Transfusiology Center Konstantin Maslakov told BelTA.

The center continues collecting plasma from coronavirus survivors. Fourteen people donated plasma earlier and another three on 20 May. “Moreover, two dozen recovered people in Grodno and other parts of the region are getting ready for the procedure and are undergoing the necessary tests,” Konstantin Maslakov said.

In order to become a donor of immune plasma, a person should wait 15 days since full recovery. A candidate must have no health issues or chronic diseases. The procedure lasts around 30-40 minutes. Some 600 milliliters of plasma are collected during one procedure.

“If I can help someone, who needs it, why not do this? When I was invited to become a donor, I agreed without thinking,” 19-year-old Pavel, who donated plasma on 20 May, said. He had a mild form of the disease and received treatment at home. Pavel found out that he had COVID-19 after having been tested as a first-level contact.

The center receives lists of people who have recovered from the coronavirus from clinics and epidemiologists. Konstantin Maslakov stressed that few potential donors refuse to donate plasma.

Grodno Oblast is running a campaign to thank plasma donors. The campaign was launched on the initiative of MP Yelena Potapova. Taking part in the campaign are companies, enterprises, and public associations. Taxis take all donors to the center and then back home for free.

On 20 May, donors received presents from representatives of the Grodno regional association of trade unions of construction workers. “Donors also make a great contribution to the fight against the coronavirus. And they do this of their own free will. Of course, it is important to support such initiatives,” head of the association Igor Zaichenko said. He stressed that all trade unions of Grodno Oblast are supporting healthcare workers.
