Russia's Petrozavodsk celebrates Brest millennium by renaming street

BREST, 9 September (BelTA) – The Russian city of Petrozavodsk has named a new street after its sister city Brest to mark its millennium anniversary, said Yelena Loginova, Petrozavodsk Deputy Mayor and head of the city's finance committee, as she took part in a reception of official delegations in Brest on 7 September, BelTA has learned.

“Petrozavodsk Mayor Irina Miroshnik has decided to name one of the streets in a new residential neighborhood after Brest and has already issued the appropriate resolution. We have gifted representatives of Brest a certificate confirming this event,” Yelena Loginova said.

Brest and Petrozavodsk signed a twin-town agreement in 2002. “However, historians presume that the relations between the two cities have existed much longer. In the early 19th century, Petrozavodsk's cannon maker Aleksandrovsky Plant cast cannons which were later in service in Brest Fortress. It was mentioned that they stood at the North Gate of the fortress. We believe that the relations between the two cities started developing at that time,” Yelena Loginova noted.

According to her, in the past 17 years, Brest and Petrozavodsk have become good partners and have only strengthened ties and enhanced cooperation, primarily in economy and culture. “We see a lot of prospects for cooperation. Brest is a well-known city, which is why Petrozavodsk seeks to cultivate relations with it,” Yelena Loginova said.

The reception of official delegations that arrived in Brest to take part in the millennium anniversary celebrations took place in the Brest Academic Drama Theater on 7 September. Representatives of local authorities and business communities from more than ten countries, international organizations, diplomats and MPs congratulated local residents on the city's anniversary. The UNICEF Office in Belarus gave Brest a certificate to purchase computer equipment for one of its educational institutions. From its German partner, the municipal association Mittleres Schussental, Brest received a certificate to buy medical equipment. All guests wished Brest and its residents peace, welfare, and prosperity for many years to come.
