Russian oversight agency invited to help Gosatomnadzor at Belarusian nuclear power plant site

VIENNA, 19 September (BelTA) – Inspectors of the Russian Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostechnadzor) can provide expert aid to the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) at the site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The possibility was discussed as Gosatomnadzor Head Olga Lugovskaya met with representatives of the Russian agency in Vienna, BelTA has learned.

The meeting touched upon day-to-day interaction and the fulfillment of the agreement between the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry and Rostechnadzor. Among other things the Belarusian side suggested discussing whether and on what terms Rostechnadzor inspectors could help Gosatomnadzor at the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Only permanent representatives of the Belarusian agency work there now.

Olga Lugovskaya specified the Belarusian agency would like to get the assistance periodically. Rostechnadzor missions could be present at the construction site for some time and provide expert assistance at certain stages of the nuclear project's implementation.

The Belarusian Emergencies Ministry and Rostechnadzor signed a cooperation agreement in December 2013. It allows the national regulatory bodies of Belarus and Russia to closely cooperate in matters of nuclear and radiation safety, to arrange joint inspections, internship and personnel training.
