Roaming rates in Eastern Partnership unlikely to change before 2020

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – Roaming rates in the Eastern Partnership Initiative countries will change in 2020 at the earliest, Belarusian Communications and Informatization Minister Konstantin Shulgan told BelTA in an interview.

The official said that since 2017 the Belarusian Communications and Informatization Ministry has been looking into roaming issues in two areas: the Union State of Belarus and Russia and the Eastern Partnership Initiative countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine). As for the Eastern Partnership direction, statistic data about roaming indicators will be collected in 2019 and a draft roaming agreement will be worked on. “We don't expect new rates on communications services will be available for roaming subscribers sooner than 2020,” the communications and informatization minister said.

As for plans to cancel roaming charges in the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the relevant ministries have been instructed to present a plan of the relevant measures in June 2019. “As a result of cooperation of the relevant ministries, mobile carriers, and antimonopoly agencies the main approaches have been determined to fulfilling the assigned tasks. A plan of action has been drafted. It is being discussed in detail,” Konstantin Shulgan added.
