Refugee: I had to leave home in pursuit of a better life

GRODNO, 10 December (BelTA) –Refugees have to look for a better life, because at home they feel left behind, refugee Mehrdad from Iran told BelTA.

Refugees have been stranded at the Belarus-Poland border for 33 days already. Now they are in the temporary accommodation facility set up at the logistics hub near the Bruzgi checkpoint. People still hope that the situation will change.

“I am an old man already. I hope to get to Germany. I have relatives there. I was a sailor, I saw probably half the world, and after all that I had to set off on such a journey,” Mehrdad said.

According to him, a difficult situation forced him to leave his hometown of Shiraz in southern Iran. “The government does not want to deal with problems facing ordinary people. It is impossible to run a business, make money, there are no good jobs, I have nothing to provide for four children. By the way, your country, as I have noticed, is completely different. And your leader is not like the leaders of neighboring countries. We are very grateful to Belarus for the help,” the refugee added.
