Possible competition between Belarusian automaker MZKT, Russian KamAZ viewed as healthy

MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian automobile engineering company MZKT will be able to successfully compete on foreign markets despite the presence of the Russian company KamAZ, BelTA learned from Chairman of the State Military Industrial Committee of Belarus Roman Golovchenko on 12 November.

The official said that for a long time MZKT has been the main supplier of wheeled platforms for all the modern Russian weapon systems. “Indeed, KamAZ is developing a vehicle, which may compete with MZKT products. It is only normal. Every country, including Belarus, aims for independence and reliance on its own resources. We see no tragedy in that,” said Roman Golovchenko.

“We will continue competing with Russian vehicles. We may come up with some joint products. Nevertheless, we are preparing for a less than positive scenario of events on the Russian market,” said the official.

In particular, MZKT is busy diversifying its business. In addition to supplying the wheeled platform for modern weapon systems the company is exploring the possibility of building some of the things these platforms carry.

“MZKT has a huge potential. A great deal has been invested in retooling the company. Now it is a cutting-edge mechanical engineering enterprise. There is no other company like that in the Commonwealth of Independent States. It has the ability to make complete weapon systems on wheels instead of simply wheeled platforms. The world is moving away from tracked vehicles to wheeled ones. We see excellent opportunities for creating artillery systems, air defense weapons, and missile systems based on MZKT vehicles,” Roman Golovchenko is convinced.
