Plans to establish constitutional complaint mechanism in Belarus

MINSK, 16 June (BelTA) - Belarusians will be able to apply to the Constitutional Court to check the compliance of court proceedings with the Constitution, Deputy Chairperson of the Constitutional Court, member of the Constitutional Commission Natalya Karpovich said during a meeting of the Constitutional Commission in Minsk on 16 June, BelTA has learned.

“It is proposed to empower the Constitutional Court to determine the constitutionality of the laws applied in a particular court case, if all other remedies are exhausted. Establishing a constitutional complaint mechanism in Belarus will give citizens a direct access to constitutional justice, will provide an opportunity to avoid possible distortion of the constitutional and legal meaning of the laws in a particular court case," Natalya Karpovich said.

The Constitutional Commission convened for the sixth session on 16 June to discuss constitutional provisions concerning the court system.
