Persian Lessons filmed in Belarus screened at Berlin International Film Festival

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – Persian Lessons was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, BelTA learned from Belarusfilm film studio.

Persian Lessons is an international project of three countries: Russia (Hype Film and LM Media), Germany (One Two Films) and Belarus (Belarusfilm). The plot presents the story of a Belgian Jew Gilles Cremieux who pretends to be a Persian to save himself from being shot in a concentration camp. In order to survive, Gilles has to teach Persian to Klaus Koch, a cook in the concentration camp who wants to open a restaurant in Iran. But instead of Persian Gilles teaches him non-existent language that he made up to survive.

By combining a tragic story with comedic scenes the director made an incredibly touching film about the Holocaust. The film is not about terrible Nazi atrocities, but humanity, trust and human relationships. The director is Vadim Perelman, the screenwriter is Ilja Zofin. The plot is based on the story Erfindung einer Sprache by German filmmaker Wolfgang Kohlhaase.

The main shooting took place in Belarus, at Belarusfilm film set. The film stars Lars Eidinger and Nahuel Perez Biscayart. The extras were Belarusians.

The film was screened at Berlinale Palast, the main venue of the festival, and had a ten-minute ovation. It is expected to be shown in movie theaters after the festival.
