Over 370 renal, 50 cardiac transplants performed in Belarus in 2019

MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – Some 374 renal transplants (including 11 transplants for children) and 52 heart transplants were carried out in Belarus in 2019, Belarusian Healthcare Minister Vladimir Karanik said at a final board of the Healthcare Ministry on 25 February, BelTA has learned.

Belarusian transplant surgery is making good progress, the minister said. Last year 93 liver transplants were done, including 12 transplants for children. Most of the liver transplants performed on children were emergency surgeries that helped save the children's lives. Nine lung transplants and 148 hematopoietic stem cell transplantations (HSCT) were carried out.

The construction of a new module and a surgery building at the Minsk Research and Practice Center of Surgery, Transplantation and Hematology will give a further boost to these areas of medicine.

The achievements of the national transplant service help reduce the death rate, promote international cooperation and improve Belarus' international standing in this field of medicine. The foreign currency generated by the national transplant service is used to upgrade the domestic healthcare sector.
