Over 23m trees planted in Belarus during Forest Week 2020

MINSK, 6 April (BelTA) – More than 23 million trees were planted in Belarus during the 2020 edition of the nationwide voluntary campaign Forest Week, First Deputy Forestry Minister Valentin Shatravko told the STV channel, BelTA has learned.

“We did almost everything we planned for the Forest Week campaign. The goal was to plant over 18 million trees. We have already planted 23 million trees, mostly coniferous, all over the country. Most of them were planted in place of dried-out areas of coniferous forest,” Valentin Shatravko explained.

According to him, the Forestry Ministry plans to plant over 33,000 hectares to new forest in 2020. “Around 25,000 hectares of new forest has already been planted, and this process continues. As forecasts predict good weather, we will be finishing the work by the end of next week,” Valentin Shatravko said.

The nationwide voluntary campaign Forest Week was running in Belarus from 28 March till 4 April. The main objective of the campaign is to draw public attention to the necessity of careful attitude to forests. Special emphasis is placed on the work with young people. This year, Belarus organized the campaign for the 13th time.
