MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian border service stopped more than half a tonne of drugs at the border with the European Union in January-October 2019. The matter was discussed as Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Anatoly Lappo met with Head of the European Union Delegation to Belarus Dirk Schuebel, BelTA has learned.

The state of affairs at the state border in January-October 2019 was discussed. Close attention was paid to the problem of drugs smuggling across the Belarus-EU border. In the period under review the Belarusian border service detected more than half a tonne of drugs, primarily hashish, marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy. Apart from that, a decrease in illegal transit migration was mentioned during the meeting. In January-October 2019 the Belarusian border service stopped 262 trespassers, down from over 500 in January-October 2018.

It was noted that the situation at the Belarus-EU border is stable. At the same time efforts of certain individuals and crime syndicates involved in illegal transit migration, the smuggling of narcotic substances and psychotropic substances had an effect on the situation.

Anatoly Lappo stressed that the Belarusian border service makes a tangible contribution to stronger security in the region. Belarus protects interests of the European Union from threats of transboundary criminal nature and terrorist nature evolving in the East while simultaneously safeguarding Russia's interests against the same actions manifested in the West.

In turn, Dirk Schuebel praised cooperation with the Belarusian border service. “Our relations rely on a very good base. We are ready to continue cooperation,” he said.

At the end of the meeting Anatoly Lappo and Dirk Schuebel discussed plans to beef up regional border security.
