OSCE to step up joint efforts to combat extremism, terrorism

MINSK, 26 March (BelTA) – The OSCE member states deem it necessary to strengthen international cooperation for more efficient fight against the spread of extremism and radicalization and for prevention of terrorism. These matters were discussed at the OSCE-wide Counter-Terrorism Conference 2019 “Taking stock of efforts to prevent and counter terrorism, as well as violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism (VERLT) in the OSCE area” that is taking place in Bratislava on 25-26 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Belarus' delegation at the conference is led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko. He delivered a keynote speech at a high-level segment where spoke about Belarus' good practices in identifying and preventing the spread of extremism and radicalization, in combating terrorism activities and eliminating reasons and conditions that give rise to such activities.

“The event took stock of international efforts to count terrorism and implement good practices in preventing VERLT in the OSCE region, co-ordination between governments and civil society, mechanisms to rehabilitate and reintegrate terrorist offenders,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed.

Oleg Kravchenko met with Paul Bekkers, Director of the Office of the OSCE Secretary General, Rasa Ostrauskaite, Co-ordinator of Activities to Address Transnational Threats at the OSCE, Acting CSTO Secretary General Valery Semerikov, deputy ministers of foreign affairs of Slovakia, Russia and Armenia, representatives of the U.S. Department of State and the European External Action Service.

Apart from that, Oleg Kravchenko met with Secretary General for Foreign Affairs in the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs of Austria Johannes Peterlik. The diplomats discussed a broad range of issues of the bilateral agenda and Belarus' dialogue with the European Union.
