Opinion: Young people are entrusted with the responsibility for preserving the memory about the war

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – The weight of responsibility for preserving the memory about the war rests primarily with young people. Chairman of the Education, Science, Culture, and Social Development Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Viktor Liskovich made the statement during the panel session held as part of the 7th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia on 28 September to discuss the Soviet nation's feat during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 as the foundation for teaching patriotism and civic duty, BelTA has learned.

The senator said: “We cannot leave unattended the matters of preservation of historical memory about our joint Great Victory. Our fathers and forefathers stopped a catastrophe. But the world ignores tragic lessons of the past. Today we talk more and more about the need to not only preserve but defend the victory of our nations. The weight of responsibility for preserving the memory about the war rests primarily with young people. It is the younger generation of Belarusians and Russians that will have to put every effort into preserving peace and calm in our countries while remembering what our nations had to go through.”

Belarus and Russia have implemented a set of measures and initiatives on par with the systemic state policy to immortalize memory about the war and its heroes. The construction of the Rzhev Monument to the Soviet Soldier is one of those projects. Structures in the Brest Fortress are being reconstructed as well, Viktor Liskovich noted.

The 7th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia is scheduled to take place on 28-29 September as a videoconference. The forum is dedicated to the historical legacy of the Great Patriotic War as the foundation of development of social, economic, and spiritual ties between the peoples of Belarus and Russia. Five panel sessions have been organized to discuss parliamentary cooperation, joint economic projects, the Soviet nation's feat during the Great Patriotic War, efforts to counteract Nazism glorification, and ways to encourage young people in rural areas to be more active. A joint session of business councils of Belarus and Russia will take place as well as a high-level session to discuss education as the foundation of historical memory and further integration-based development of the Union State of Belarus and Russia.

A session of the Interparliamentary Commission on Interregional Cooperation of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia will take place to discuss regional cooperation, the fulfillment of documents adopted during previous forums, and the advancement of scientific and technical cooperation.

A plenary session to sum up results of the panel sessions, discuss key matters, and pass a summation document will be the central event of the forum.
