Opinion: Interests of ordinary people should be at the heart of Constitution amendment effort

MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) – Interests of ordinary people should be at the forefront of the Constitution amendment effort, Judge of Belarus' Constitutional Court Alla Bodak told reporters after the swearing-in ceremony, BelTA has learned.

In the new position Alla Bodak will join in the efforts to draw up Constitution amendment proposals. It is important to follow certain criteria and approaches in this work, she believes. “First of all, this is the strengthening of Belarus' sovereignty and statehood. I am talking about creating necessary conditions for all three branches of power to help them develop further and address the tasks to promote the country's sustainable development,” she said.

Alla Bodak highlighted the great importance of the Constitution for the development of the state. “It is a legal framework, the reference point in our work to strengthen the sovereign Belarusian statehood. The Constitution enshrines the principle of priority of the rights and freedoms of citizens. This is the basic, fundamental principle, according to which people, their rights and freedoms are the supreme value, the aim of the society and the state. The Constitutional Court protects this and other provisions of the Constitution in our country,” Alla Bodak noted.

She added that she will rely on her extensive experience at the new post. Prior to the appointment of the judge of the Constitutional Court, Alla Bodak held a number of different posts in the Justice Ministry, including the deputy minister's. She also headed a commission in the Council of the Republic. “While in charge of the parliament's commission I gained invaluable experience. t helped me get a more comprehensive view of the statehood. It helped me better understand what we should do to strengthen our statehood and to create the necessary conditions for sustainable development of the society. I will tap into this experience at the new post,” the judge said.
